Everyone Hates Marketers: Repurposing Your Best Work (ft. Louis Grenier)

SHOW NOTES:

Louis Grenier is a marketing consultant whose stated mission is to “fight marketing bullshit,” which he does with his company Everyone Hates Marketers, and a podcast by the same name.

After three years and 200 interview-style podcast episodes, Louis realized he was forgetting who his guests were even five episodes ago. So in March 2021, he decided to refresh himself, and his show.

New episodes are shorter, in monologue format, and focus around one marketing lesson, rather than on a guest. In these episodes, Grenier re-packages clips from his past interview episodes and cites examples from books and other sources. It really works for the listener, even if you never heard the original interviews. And it’s working for Louis, as a way to showcase his own marketing know-how. Among other topics, Louis and Jay discuss developing a personal brand and host persona, and how to make your podcast stand out in a crowded field.

Appearances: When Fiction Gets Personal (ft. Sharon Mashihi)

Audio performer, artist, and storyteller Sharon Mashihi discusses her acclaimed 2020 limited series podcast Appearances. This beautifully crafted show blurs the lines between fact and fiction. It follows the story of an Iranian American woman who’s approaching middle age and delving into big life questions about family, relationships, and motherhood.

Jay and Sharon discuss how she crafted this complex and very personal 9-part series over the course of a year. And they touch on how Sharon is still processing the aftermath of creating a show that mined emotional and creative depths.

Deviate: Creative Cross-Training (ft. Rolf Potts)

Travel writer Rolf Potts’ podcast, Deviate, is usually an interview show with other writers, travelers and filmmakers reflecting on their experiences and sometimes waxing philosophical. Usually, because, true to its name, some episodes of Deviate stray from both topic and format. Alternative formats have included narrative, essay, chatcast, and the one we feature here: an episode about a 20+ mile walk, with all audio recorded while on that walk.

Jay and Rolf discuss the value in exercising different creative muscles, even if it costs you some downloads. Also, the art of capturing a story in the moment without much pre-planned structure, the magic dust of chemistry between people on a podcast, and how Rolf has stayed true to his show’s premise, even when he deviates from the topic of travel.

REPLAY: Smithsonian’s Sidedoor: A Look Inside Great Narrative (ft. Lizzie Peabody)

Narrative podcasting has a way of immersing listeners in truly memorable, deeply resonant experiences. But how do they come together — and better yet, how can we create our own, even when we don’t have tons of resources?

Interviewing, Seriously (ft. Juleyka Lantigua-Williams)

SHOW NOTES:

The first time we had veteran producer, host, and production company founder/CEO Juleyka Lantigua-Williams on the show was in November 2020. Back then, Jay spoke with Juleyka about developing her company and the show she hosts, How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything – a podcast that helps adult children of immigrant parents broach difficult topics with their families.

We invited Juleyka back for this special episode on interviewing because of her depth of experience. We particularly appreciate the vulnerability, sensitivity, nerve, and humor that she brings to conversations with her guests, and shared with us. Listen, learn, and level up.

Design Matters: Deep Research as Respect (ft. Debbie Millman)

Debbie Millman started her interview show about design as a radio program to fulfill her need to explore her own creativity. That was 16 years ago, and Design Matters has been in production every since: it’s the world’s first podcast about design. Debbie has welcomed over 500 guests to her now wildly popular podcast to explore creative culture and how some of the most influential thinkers, artists, musicians, writers, and designers create their work, career, and life.

In this interview, host Jay Acunzo and Debbie discuss how she got started as a host, what’s kept her going, and why her research documents for each and every guest can be as long as 70 pages.

This is an episode you won’t want to miss. And bring a pen and paper because you’ll want to take notes.

You Heard Me Write: Structure Sets Us Free (ft. Kacie Willis)

Every so often we come across a show so refreshing, so original, it revamps our whole idea of what a podcast can be. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Atlanta-based sound designer Kacie Willis made her living from live theater. In 2020, Kacie found herself stuck at home without any gigs – and, like many of us, watching people hide behind screen names to attack each other on the internet. So Kacie created You Heard Me Write, a podcast that draws on the creativity of local writers and sound artists, and uses anonymity to unite rather than divide. The show uses a very specific episode structure, and we promise you haven’t heard anything like it before. In the interview, Kacie also discusses working with Spotify, and how she-  a self-described introvert-  developed her hosting persona.

Creative Elements: Setting Your Guest Up for Success (ft. Jay Clouse)

It’s a hard truth about interview shows: if the guest doesn’t deliver, it’s not their fault. Instead, it’s the host’s responsibility to walk away with an insightful, informative, and engaging recording. In this episode, 3 Clips host Jay Acunzo talks with Jay Clouse, a podcaster who does an exemplary job of setting his guests up for success; by drawing on research, past experience, voice over, and a little bit of sound design. Listen to learn how Jay’s show, Creative Elements – where he interviews creators about how they came to perform their craft full time – stands out from the pack. Also in this episode: how to book guests you don’t know with a great cold email.
