Wireframe: Fonts as People (ft. Khoi Vinh and Dominic Girard)
When’s the last time you attended an audio-only house party populated entirely by personified versions of fonts? Actual typefaces like Arial and Times New Roman speaking at you like real life people? Imagine how obnoxious Comic Sans sounds… Welcome to the ambitious world of Wireframe, a podcast from Adobe and Pacific Content. Inside today’s episode, Jay speaks with Khoi Vinh and Dominic Girard, two of the three hosts of Wireframe, a show with a unique eye toward helping design professionals and the design-curious, fostering a new appreciation for the craft while demonstrating how design impacts the world around you. Khoi and Dominic breakdown the nitty-gritty with Jay, ranging from logistics between hosts and the brandteam, what it means to be a podcast host versus a public speaker, and tricks for transforming show guests into actors. Wireframe is not a show that’s afraid to reach. Khoi Vinh, named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company, is Senior Director of Product Design at Adobe. His co-host Dominic Girard is a showrunner from Pacific Content, a podcast production company which helps make Wireframe as well as shows from some of the world’s top brands like Dell, Charles Schwab, Atlassean, and Facebook. Flash Forward: Ethically Mixing Fact and Fiction (ft. Rose Eveleth)
In 2021, we’re blessed to live in a podcast landscape ripe with richly reported nonfiction shows that challenge your way of thinking and expand your world: Reply All, Invisibilia, Far Flung, the list goes on. There is also an expanding slate of fictional podcasts to get lost in. But what if you could have both in one show? With Flash Forward, a show about the future, our guest Rose Eveleth inspires imaginations and pushes listeners to think about the world we live in now, and how it could be different. Like other science shows, Rose calls on scientists and other experts to break down complex concepts in an accessible way. But sprinkled throughout each episode are speculative fiction scenes that offer a glimpse of “possible and not so possible futures.” In this episode of 3 Clips, Rose and Jay break down a Flash Forward episode about humans’ search for alien life. They discuss how to make scientists sound podcast-worthy, how Rose has carved out her own voice in the science genre, and her fiction writing process. Also, Rose offers insights on how she’s managed to make such a multilayered show as an independent producer. EXPLORE THE SHOW 3clipspodcast.com for all episodes of the show. Drilled: Rigorous Audio Journalism (ft. Amy Westervelt)
Amy Westervelt is a print and audio journalist and environmentalist; she founded the podcast network Critical Frequency, which raises up important but often overlooked voices; and she is the executive producer and host of the critically acclaimed show Drilled. The through line here is that Amy has an enduring interest in telling stories that are getting covered up, and doing the hard work of figuring out what’s really going on. Jay and Amy discuss the rigorous and thorough process involved in creating a show like Drilled, which focuses on stories that investigate propaganda in the fossil fuel industry. And they get into why audio is a powerful medium for the stories Amy chooses to cover on the podcast. EXPLORE THE SHOW Visit 3clipspodcast.com for all episodes of the show. Everyone Hates Marketers: Repurposing Your Best Work (ft. Louis Grenier)
SHOW NOTES: Louis Grenier is a marketing consultant whose stated mission is to “fight marketing bullshit,” which he does with his company Everyone Hates Marketers, and a podcast by the same name. After three years and 200 interview-style podcast episodes, Louis realized he was forgetting who his guests were even five episodes ago. So in March 2021, he decided to refresh himself, and his show. New episodes are shorter, in monologue format, and focus around one marketing lesson, rather than on a guest. In these episodes, Grenier re-packages clips from his past interview episodes and cites examples from books and other sources. It really works for the listener, even if you never heard the original interviews. And it’s working for Louis, as a way to showcase his own marketing know-how. Among other topics, Louis and Jay discuss developing a personal brand and host persona, and how to make your podcast stand out in a crowded field. Appearances: When Fiction Gets Personal (ft. Sharon Mashihi)
Audio performer, artist, and storyteller Sharon Mashihi discusses her acclaimed 2020 limited series podcast Appearances. This beautifully crafted show blurs the lines between fact and fiction. It follows the story of an Iranian American woman who’s approaching middle age and delving into big life questions about family, relationships, and motherhood. Jay and Sharon discuss how she crafted this complex and very personal 9-part series over the course of a year. And they touch on how Sharon is still processing the aftermath of creating a show that mined emotional and creative depths. EXPLORE THE SHOW Visit 3clipspodcast.com for all episodes of the show. Deviate: Creative Cross-Training (ft. Rolf Potts)
Travel writer Rolf Potts’ podcast, Deviate, is usually an interview show with other writers, travelers and filmmakers reflecting on their experiences and sometimes waxing philosophical. Usually, because, true to its name, some episodes of Deviate stray from both topic and format. Alternative formats have included narrative, essay, chatcast, and the one we feature here: an episode about a 20+ mile walk, with all audio recorded while on that walk. Jay and Rolf discuss the value in exercising different creative muscles, even if it costs you some downloads. Also, the art of capturing a story in the moment without much pre-planned structure, the magic dust of chemistry between people on a podcast, and how Rolf has stayed true to his show’s premise, even when he deviates from the topic of travel. Interviewing, Seriously (ft. Juleyka Lantigua-Williams)
SHOW NOTES: The first time we had veteran producer, host, and production company founder/CEO Juleyka Lantigua-Williams on the show was in November 2020. Back then, Jay spoke with Juleyka about developing her company and the show she hosts, How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything – a podcast that helps adult children of immigrant parents broach difficult topics with their families. We invited Juleyka back for this special episode on interviewing because of her depth of experience. We particularly appreciate the vulnerability, sensitivity, nerve, and humor that she brings to conversations with her guests, and shared with us. Listen, learn, and level up. Design Matters: Deep Research as Respect (ft. Debbie Millman)
Debbie Millman started her interview show about design as a radio program to fulfill her need to explore her own creativity. That was 16 years ago, and Design Matters has been in production every since: it’s the world’s first podcast about design. Debbie has welcomed over 500 guests to her now wildly popular podcast to explore creative culture and how some of the most influential thinkers, artists, musicians, writers, and designers create their work, career, and life. In this interview, host Jay Acunzo and Debbie discuss how she got started as a host, what’s kept her going, and why her research documents for each and every guest can be as long as 70 pages. You Heard Me Write: Structure Sets Us Free (ft. Kacie Willis)
Every so often we come across a show so refreshing, so original, it revamps our whole idea of what a podcast can be. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Atlanta-based sound designer Kacie Willis made her living from live theater. In 2020, Kacie found herself stuck at home without any gigs – and, like many of us, watching people hide behind screen names to attack each other on the internet. So Kacie created You Heard Me Write, a podcast that draws on the creativity of local writers and sound artists, and uses anonymity to unite rather than divide. The show uses a very specific episode structure, and we promise you haven’t heard anything like it before. In the interview, Kacie also discusses working with Spotify, and how she- a self-described introvert- developed her hosting persona. Creative Elements: Setting Your Guest Up for Success (ft. Jay Clouse)
It’s a hard truth about interview shows: if the guest doesn’t deliver, it’s not their fault. Instead, it’s the host’s responsibility to walk away with an insightful, informative, and engaging recording. In this episode, 3 Clips host Jay Acunzo talks with Jay Clouse, a podcaster who does an exemplary job of setting his guests up for success; by drawing on research, past experience, voice over, and a little bit of sound design. Listen to learn how Jay’s show, Creative Elements – where he interviews creators about how they came to perform their craft full time – stands out from the pack.
