Resilient Retail: Shopify's Latest Big Bet on Podcasting & the Subtle Art of the Interview (ft. Kristen LaFrance)
Kristen shares thoughtful insights into how she preps for and conducts interviews that specifically serve the needs of her listeners. She also talks about how she navigated rising to the occasion when the stakes got high: Kristen was told just days into her new job at Shopify that she’d be taking over the podcast hosting duties from Harley Finklestein, the company’s president. And then she learned that he’d be her first interview guest for the show. Talk about pressure! A key component to Kristen’s, and by extension the show’s, success is how much thought went into developing the show’s premise. Also critical is that Kristen has a deep understanding of the retail world and she is actively involved in the community she serves. In other words, she knows who her audience is and the type of information they will benefit from, and then she goes and gets it. Resilient Retail launched in October of 2020 and is a twice-weekly interview show that focuses on the world of retail, with a particular focus on serving small business owners trying to figure out the online space. Resilient Retail also has a YouTube channel and a robust five-year growth plan that extends far beyond the podcast. The show went from idea to launch in just three weeks, but of course it took Juleyka’s years of work in podcasting to make something like that possible. This show is personal, which is why Juleyka cast herself in a role she wouldn’t normally choose: she’s the show host and narrator. How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything addresses issues that adult children of immigrant parents may have a hard time talking to their parents about. Juleyka herself is from the Domincan Republic and moved to the US when she was 10, so she makes the perfect stand-in for her audience, because she is the audience. CONFLICTED: The Process Driving Jaw-Dropping Shows
When journalist Jake Warren met Aimen Dean — a former Al Qaeda bomb-maker turned agent for the British intelligence service MI6, who happened to be super smart and deeply knowledgeable about Middle East politics — he knew he had hit storytelling pay dirt. So when Jake started his own podcasting company a few years later, he was determined to get Aimen behind the mic. But there were a couple of problems: the guy could talk for nine hours, and would sometimes get pretty deep in the weeds. So they brought in Thomas Small — an author, documentary film producer, Middle East scholar, and good friend of Aimen’s – to be co host.The resulting podcast, CONFLICTED, from Jake’s company Message Heard, breaks down the complexities of history, religion and politics of the Middle East and puts them in a global context. The first season begins with 9/11 and focuses on the War on Terror and associated conflicts in the region.
